I never really bought into the anti-plastic movement. It is really handy stuff. That is until it started showing up everywhere my family went to play. It used to be that we only found allot of plastic at "garbage can beach" on the south end of the island. Now, it washes up on all the beaches, as far north on the Big Island as Kua Bay. We have been at the green sands beach near South Point when the high tide mark was clearly outlined by a white line of small plastic bits. Once we went surfing in "jelly fish" that were really remnants of plastic produce bags. Other times we find ourselves at beaches that are so coated with plastic that it is hard to find non-plastic things, like sand and sea shells and drift wood. Moved to limited action, I joined surf rider and took the Rise Against Plastics pledge. When my local grocery store offered reusable cloth bags I bought them. Yet, I kept finding myself at the checkout stand with out a bag of my own to reuse. So I made myself a purse with a stuff pocket and bought a few light nylon bags and so far its been working...no more plastic bags for me. I still have to buy katchsup in plastic, and a few other things, but at least I can congratulate myself on the shopping bag and plastic water bottle front. So, I started making bags for friends and family and to sell. All my purses, totes and hand bags incorporate an exterior stuff pocket with a zipper for an included reusable shopping bag.
